Fiona and Rob have been running Plas Coch since August 2019 when they took over this well-run and highly-rated ‘Gwesty’ (guest house).  They have continued to develop Plas Coch, set out an attractive wildlife-friendly garden and contributed time to supporting a wide range of community projects in the village in line with their vision and mission statement.

Previously headteachers in the south east of England, Fiona and Rob had been travelling to Snowdonia every school holiday for years until they decided that they wanted to run a business together and make a positive contribution to the economy, community and conservation of this beautiful corner of North Wales.

Fiona enjoys the local wild swimming opportunities and is a keen craftswoman and gardener- you may spot some of her work in the local mysterious yarn bombing and her home-grown flowers at your breakfast table! Fiona enjoys baking the tasty treats that await guests returning from their walks and experimenting to create the perfect home made preserves for the famous Plas Coch breakfast!

Rob often volunteers on nature conservation projects in the area with the Snowdonia Society- he even appeared on Countryfile whilst working on the Llanberis Path! Along with Cor Meibion Dyffryn Peris (the local male voice choir) this gives him an opportunity to learn and practice his spoken Welsh! Rob is a qualified Mountain Leader, a very experienced walker, runner and scrambler and an enthusiastic beginner with rock climbing. He likes nothing better than helping guests plan the perfect mountain day!

You may see the three Plas Coch cats, Ted Declan and Geoffrey but they are not known for their outgoing personalities and are strictly not allowed in the guests’ accommodation!

Where is Plas Coch?

Nestled in the dramatic yet beautiful Dyffryn Peris valley, Plas Coch is in the centre of Llanberis and is surrounded by some of the biggest mountains in Eryri- Snowdonia National Park. Close to the start of the Llanberis Path, Plas Coch is the perfect base for a climb of Yr Wyddfa; Snowdon; the highest UK peak outside of Scotland. Alternatively the Snowdon Mountain Railway station is just a 10 minute walk away.

Plas Coch literally means ‘Red Mansion’ and draws its name from the Afon Goch (Red River) that flows through the garden. Coch and Goch rhyme with ‘fork’. This large and important house stands in the centre of the village but open countryside is just a couple of minutes’ walk and views all around are of mountains and woods.

The stunning mountain scenery is complemented by ancient oak forests, massive disused quarry workings and the vast yet accessible Llyn (lake) Padarn with its rowing boats, wild swimmers, paddle boarders and canoes. Llanberis itself has cafes, shops, takeaways, pubs and restaurants within short walking distance.

The dramatic and imposing Elidir Fawr and Elidir Fach dominate the viewto the front and Moel Eilio to the rear but Y Garn, Glyder Fawr, Garnedd Ugain, Moel Cynghorion, Foel Goch, Foel Gron can all be seen and reached from Plas Coch on foot if conditions and fitness levels allow!

The area is a mecca for rock climbers with beginner crags on the Llyn and adventurous climbs and scrambles in the massive Llanberis Pass. Ogwen Valley is nearby and Tremadog and South Stack further afield but easy drives. We have excellent relationships with local mountaineering instructors and can help you find a suitably qualified guide should you want to develop your skills during your stay.
